Margaret Woodward

Crossed Hands

(1998)

This is a true composite portrait with the head Margaret’s self-portrait and the hands modelled by Margaret’s daughter, Britt. There is also the presence of her bull mastiff while Margaret has also included one of her still life pictures in the background.

Margaret often employed red pastel during this period providing a sharp contrast to the darkly shaded black and white pictures. The crossed arms bring forth her mythological musings, a sense of submission and perhaps reverence rather than meant as a defensive gesture. She gave herself to her practice and her beliefs.
