Margaret Woodward

Model Study

(c1957)

This study of a studio model is an exploration of Margaret’s interest in colour and the placement of the figure within the picture plane. The figure is seated so that Margaret is almost behind her, the faint image of a figure in the background possibly a student with a better view. The fleshy right arm dominates the picture along the strong profile of the woman, the slump in the chair a sign that the session had been a long one.

It is an interesting work from the perspective of Margaret’s ability to convey the personality of the artist’s model alongside her experimentation with her craft. The work continues her fascination with the modernists and her ability to energise a work with the personality of a sitter, not to mention the beautiful soft colouring.
