Old Lady and Persimmons
(Not dated)
Margaret contrasts the bounty of the persimmons, crisply drawn, with the old lady perched against the table, merging into the background, her figure smudged. She ponders life, youth and the passage of time, playing with one of the pieces of fruit. They are not for her to eat but rather to act as a device.
Margaret often used fruit to suggest life and the domestic. Women are those who spend their lives feeding others, providing that sustenance, aging women not visible within popular culture. Margaret had documented her own aging, and could perceive herself as the aged woman who once painted the fruit. It is a melancholy work yet exacting in its message of the journey ahead.
