Summer Afternoon
(1998)
An idyllic image of mother and child, the subject Margaret’s friend. Margaret uses the familiar device of horizontal placement of the subject against a pale background. She also includes her favourite patterned fabric, the material falling off the hammock as the mother gazes at her child.
It is an image of motherly reflection, the patterns of the filtered light courtesy of the summer sun, synchronising with the fabric. Margaret uses a palette of muted pastels and browns, her friend’s black hair dominant in the composition.
