The Working Chair
(Not dated)
This extraordinary work is one of Margaret’s finest. The black background silhouettes the figure of a child who appears within an ecclesial setting, the patterning to the right of the picture creating a sense of stained glass. The dark colours of Velasquez and Rembrandt dominate the picture. The fish further support her interest in biblical references as signs of sustenance, making their way into many of Margaret’s pictures.
She knew how to paint their translucent flesh, the rainbow colours in this instance complimenting the backing of the chair. She alludes to the notion of disability, a working chair necessary for transport. The stripes of the shirt, strange pale arm that reaches down and the almost pleading look of the child provide one of Margaret’s more complex compositions.
